This mentor text is a YouTube video by Chella Man, in which two people, Kyle and Chella, who are both deaf or partially deaf, go to a movie theatre. It brings up an issue that I haven't really ever thought of before: how do deaf people watch movies. Throughout the video it displays how forgotten deaf people are. They asked for closed caption devices from the employee, and she gave them headphones, then once they got the right devices, it took a while for them to even get them on. Once they started watching the movie, the caption device didn't even work. One was broken and not staying up so he couldn't read it, and the other one was playing the subtitles for the wrong movie. Overall, this video was a demonstration of how movie theaters are not accommodating for deaf people. It brings to light something that a lot of people who are not deaf probably haven't thought of before. Its easy to not be realize and be aware when it doesn't affect us, but to the people afflicted by this, it is a huge issue. Movies theaters should be accessible for everyone, but this video shows that they are far from it right now, and they would have been better just staying at home and using closed captions there. This video shows how we need to improve as a society, and that we need to shed light on these issues. This mentor text can also serve as an inspiration for other people faced with problems most of us are not aware of, to be able to show how we need to improve.
